The Newbury Branch is based at the Stone Building beside the Canal on Newbury’s historic wharf and keeps an eye on the canal from Kintbury to Woolhampton.
The Stone Building houses the Teashop by the Canal, which is open daily for light refreshments, cakes, sandwiches, ice creams and canal gifts.
Upstairs is the Canal Information Centre, the John Gould Room, with information to inspire and inform those who use the canal. Open to the public daily during café opening hours unless there is a function taking place. Call the café in advance before travelling. The John Gould Room is available for hire as a meeting or function room.

What we do:
- We organise the Newbury Waterways Festival
Most years, the Newbury Waterways Festival is held in July in Victoria Park by kind permission of Newbury Town Council. The volunteers of the branch work hard for months in advance to organise the festival. Everything from stall bookings to erecting tents is the work of our volunteers. The main event is on the Sunday when Victoria Park is filled with trade and charity stalls with entertainment for all the family. We arrange a colourful flotilla of boats to moor alongside the Park. The branch raises a significant amount for Trust funds through the festival. The next Festival had been due to take place on Sunday 5th July 2020 with a theme of ‘The Great British Summer’. However, in view of the coronavirus situation it has been postponed until 4th July 2021.
We operate Jubilee, the Trust’s only narrowboat trip boat
The trip boat Jubilee has operated in Newbury since 2012 and every year the boat trips prove to be more and more popular. The boat is crewed by trained volunteers who enjoy taking passengers on the Kennet & Avon canal to show them what an asset the canal is for everyone to enjoy. The Jubilee is a narrowboat and provides public trips throughout the summer months. We particularly enjoy our themed trips aimed at children such as our Pirate, Halloween and Santa trips.
See our dedicated website for more information: jubilee.katrust.org.uk
- We created the John Gould Room as a canal information centre and continue to maintain and update it.
Opened in 2014, the John Gould Room is upstairs at the Stone Building and serves as a multi-function room. Designed as a Canal Information Centre, there are information boards explaining the canal from past to present and other information material for visitors to peruse. The room is a result of many hours of work by volunteers; from ideas and design, though woodwork and painting, to content and pictures and much in between. The John Gould Room is open to the public daily from 10am to 4pm, unless there is a function taking place. Call the café on 01635 522609 to check before you travel.
The room is available for private hire. Please contact Jill Staig on 01635 47392 for more information.
If you would like to get involved in the Newbury Branch activities, from crewing the boat to helping at the Festival, we would be pleased to hear from you.
